Six Steps to a Character Study. Notes from Chad Grissom

These are the six steps one may follow in the process of a character study.

1. Pick a person to study. Make sure there is a clear reason to study the selection. The character should be relevant to a topic of interest.

2. Collect information on the character. For example find every scripture in which the person is mentioned. Then with the topic in mind winnowed down those verses to the most relevant texts. Make sure to collect context of the verses.

3. Study the context of the person's life. Specifically look at where this character is in the Biblical story. Using the Bible make a chronology of their life.

4. Saturate yourself in all the material you have collected up to this point. Prayfully consider important verses asking God to reveal truth and meaning. Make notes on passages as God speaks to you. Make sure to separate your context (life, times, customs etc.) from the person's context.

5. Make a list of points that God has revealed to you that you should get for this character's life. The length of the list is not important.

6. Make an application of you study of this person. Ask yourself the question, "How should I respond to what I have learned?" These applications should be concrete (i.e. measurable and demonstrable) and specific. Share these applications with others as a point of accountibility.
