Now Faith is...I was struck by one of the aspects of Dan's word study on faith. The word implies a drawing of strength from the object in which someone trusts to that person that has faith. This fundamentally shifts the focus of faith from the one who has faith to the object of that faith. This truth also makes the object of the faith infinitely more significant than the person who has faith or the strength of that faith. This became very real to me as I considered Psalm 73. "Truly God is good in Israel, even to such as are of a clean heart. But as for me, my feet were almost gone; my steps had well nigh slipped." In this scripture there are two objects I can put their faith in, God and me. Isn't that the fundamental question we all have, are you going to trust God or depend on yourself? What became very real to me today was when we trust God the very power of heaven is behind us in support. When we trust ourselves, we are on our own. God is good to those who trust in Him, to those who come to Him with a pure heart. When one trusts themselves and that is the focus of their life they find themselves almost gone, the path of thieir life is unstable and slipping. I take great comfort in the word, "almost". There is so much grace in that word. There is still opportunity for repentance in the word, "almost", an awesome opportunity. I, we can turn away from trusting in ourselves and put our faith in God. We can go from a slippery slope of uncertainty to the absolute certain knowledge of God's grace on our lives. Amen |
