The joy of being the father of a good son"O.K.," I thought to myself, "I'm gonna get out of bed and go preach tonight." Twenty minutes later, my body aching, I changed my mind....again, for the third time. With only two hours until church I had no doubts about calling my son, Stephen, to take my place. He had mentioned several times that he had been developing some Bilbical thoughts on the very theme I had been discussing on Saturday evenings. How appropriate that the theme was "The Fatherhood of God." I had spent the first teaching in this series describing how thoroughly the Son represented the Father during his earthly ministry. Near the end, Jesus told his disciples, "He that hath seen Me hath seen the Father." Of course I was very proud to hear all the good reports on what Stephen had shared. But I was most pleased that, although it would be in different words and a different style, it would be the same thing I would have done. I got myself a big smile around 7:15, the time the preaching usually starts. While God never gets sick and needs a stand in, He has chosen to leave the expression of the Kingdom in our hands. Let's bring Him the same joy I had in sending Stephen to preach. Let's let God get Himself a big smile from the way we live life on His behalf! |
